Cold forming: principle and advantages

Cold forming, or cold forging, is a technology mainly dedicated to large production runs for the production of fastening components such as bolts, special screws to specification, rivets, perforated rivets

This process allows parts to be obtained from a reel of wire by deformation of the metal.

The advantages of cold forming

The main advantages of manufacturing cold formed parts are:

  • high productivity
  • dimensional precision (particularly on the diameters)
  • regularity of surfaces
  • material savings
  • high resistance to fatigue
  • respect for the structure of the material

Principle of cold forming for the manufacture of bolts, screws, and industrial fasteners

Principle of drawing

  1. The material is pushed in the drawing die
  2. The material is deformed along the die
  3. The formed part is ejected

Principle of drilling

  1. The material is pushed in the die
  2. The punch goes into position to forge the inside of the part
  3. The formed part is ejected from the die
